Don't Get Stranded: A Realistic Guide to Surviving Jeju Island Without a Car
The Reality of Traveling
Jeju Island on Foot
What most travel guides won't tell you — the wind, the buses, the wrong maps, and the real Jeju soul.
Jeju Island on Foot
Most travel guides show Jeju as a peaceful paradise. And it is — but if you're a walk-around traveler (locally called Tteubbeoki / 뚜벅이), you need to be prepared. Public transport here isn't like Seoul. Miss a bus and you might end up walking an hour down a windy, empty road.
Use Naver Instead
Many local shops in Jeju close unexpectedly, move, or go out of business without updating their online presence. Don't just show up. I missed out on many meals because I didn't double-check.
What to Wear
Jeju's weather is unpredictable. While many think of summer as peak season, May is already scorchingly hot. Without strong sunscreen, you'll get burned within minutes of being outside.
The Real Jeju Soul
You'll notice a lot of foreign tourists, especially from China. In some areas it can feel like a mini-Chinatown. But don't let that distract you — the core "Jeju Soul" remains completely intact.
Jeju rewards the
prepared wanderer
🚌 Download KakaoBus or Jeju Bus before you go.
🗺️ Use Naver Maps + Instagram to check if places are open.
🧥 Pack a windbreaker. Always.
⭐ Consider November–December in Seogwipo.
💚 Slow down — the real Jeju is in the details.
Miss a bus, stumble upon a stone path, smell the ocean — that's when Jeju stops being a destination and becomes a memory.
🌿 Personal Experience Note: This guide is based on first-hand travel experience on Jeju Island. Bus routes, app availability, shop hours, and weather patterns are subject to change. Verify current schedules through official Jeju transport resources or the apps mentioned above before your trip.
